New Zealand Ski 1999

10/16/1999updated

We enjoyed skiing in New Zealand from 8/5/1999 through 8/12. It was a nice trip with the best snow condition.

-The First Day-

Treble Cone is located near to Lake Wanaka, which is two hours driving from Queenstown. Shuttle buses are available from Queenstown or it will be also nice to stay in Wanaka. Treble Cone has various courses and wide scale, where you should enjoy your own skiing style.

A view from Triple Treat. The contrast is interesting that there is much snow at Treble Cone while there is no snow at the lake.

A view of Outer Limits. Enjoy skiing like diving into Lake Wanaka. The right part is good for beautiful views.

At the top of SaddleT-Bar. In the left part and the backside from the peak you will enjoy skiing down as you wish. Steep slops and ups and downs should be exciting for extremer.

- The Second Day-

We enjoyed heli-skiiing on the second day. Harris Mountains Heli-Skiing, operating at Wanaka, guided us at the opposite side of Treble Cone. We took 7 runs. It cost us NZ$864.

1st run was done. Nice trail, isn't it?

The helicopter is coming to pick us up. It is very busy all day to take parties one by one while other parties are skiing.

Skiing in a valley.

We had a snow sliding just after we skied. The nature power is too dangerous to neglect.

Clear sky and best snow condition.

Lunchtime with our party. Harris Mountains makes a small party at most 4 person to run efficiently.

-The Third Day-

Remarkables, a bowl shaped ski field, is located at Queenstown area, It takes 40 minutes by bus from Queenstown and even you can see it at the town. Unfortunately we did not enjoy it because there was not much snow at that time.

Climbing up to the starting house from the bus stop.

A view from GotamCity.

A view from The Highway.

A view from Rainbow Warrior, a rocky and dynamic course.

-The Fourth Day-

Coronet Peak is also located near to Queenstown, looking down the town and the airport. It is a little smaller than Treble Cone; it has a lot of course variations and circumstance like wild areas as much as Treble Cone.

At the Donkey Serenade. The left hand is moderate.

Skiing at the Exchange Drop. The right hand is ups and downs, and wild.

Jumping from the Exchange Drop.

We stayed at Queenstown. It is good enough for the base to access to the areas and the airport even it is a small town. There are a lot of resort hotels and shops where you spend your time without skiing.

Our Breakfast. We did not take breakfast at the restaurant of the hotel, but bring crackers, cream cheese, salmon pate, caviar and ham into our room. It is very cheep but make us feel gorgeous.

Copthorne Lake front Resort, the hotel we stayed, is a typical ski resort hotel. Restaurants were not good enough.

The room we stayed. Convenient and comfortable.

Other descriptions:

This trip was a tour including air fairs, room fees and some coupon to use for ski lift tickets and shuttle buses. It cost us JPY 278,000 (8 days including 4 days skiing). We paid JPY 5000 to buy the extra coupons.

We started at Nagoya. Only flights of Air New Zealand from Nagoya stop at Fiji. It will be also nice to stay in Fiji for a few days. It was very strange that we, wearing sweaters or fleece shared the same airplane with passengers wearing T-shirts and sandal.

Lunch: Hamburger, soup and coffee will be approximately NZD 12 at a cafeteria.

Dinner: Approximately NZD 30-40 at Queenstown.
